Students block the Lagos-Abeokuta motorway over abduction of colleagues
Hundreds of students from the D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic in Itori, Ogun State, stopped the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway on Wednesday after gunmen allegedly kidnapped two of their classmates.
The kids were kidnapped in their hostel in Afowowa, Ewekoro Local Government Area, Ogun State, about 1 a.m.
The students stated they were outraged because the police allegedly refused to respond to their distress calls, and that the attack lasted over four hours.
In addition to the gunmen operating unopposed, a protester merely known as Damilola told the press that they also took away laptops, money, and other items.
“We called the cops, but no one answered.” “The cops afterwards acknowledged their car was in poor condition,” Mr Damilola said.
“When they came, they told the kids that they should take the lead in confronting the gunmen. One of the kids was shot in the leg, while others sustained serious injuries. That is why we protested on the streets.”
The students have closed the main route connecting Abeokuta with Sango-Ota and Lagos, after marching to the police station earlier.
According to reports, some police vans were stoned at the start of the protest.
When contacted, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, claimed he had not yet been told on the protest’s purpose.
