Black day in Edo as robbers hit 4 banks, Cart away with large sum of money , kill many
On Thursday, Uromi in Edo State witnessed one of the most brazen bank robberies in recent Nigerian history.
More than 20 armed men invaded the town, which falls under the Esan North-West LGA, in broad daylight and remained there for nearly 2 hours.
Explosives were used to break into the banks, and money packages were hauled out and packed into various cars.
Social media photos and videos depict the amount of carnage and death of Nigerians, including security agents.
The number of casualties is unknown, however eyewitness accounts indicate at least seven deaths and several injuries.
Residents claimed that the police and other security authorities had abandoned them. In one video, two soldiers take cover amid gunfire.
Nigerians were outraged by the heist and killings, and many wondered how the criminals were able to operate freely.
ASP Kongtons Bello, Public Relations Officer for the Edo Police Command, stated that the leadership was analyzing the issue.
“Yes, the situation that occurred yesterday is true. There was an attack on four commercial banks as well as the local police division.
“The Commissioner of Police has dispatched reinforcements from the State headquarters to bolster up security and assure the arrest of the fleeing band of criminals.”
